Tourism in Viluppuram
Villupuram a small town in the far end of Tamil Nadu is well known for ancient temples and historical sites. The area was ruled by many kings and has witnessed many wars. Since the town is easily accessible from road and train, people find it easy to reach Villupuram.Villupuram is a major junction so reaching this town via rail road is very easy. The nearest airport to reach Villupuram is Pondicherry airport which is around 40 kms away. Chennai International Airport is at a distance of about 147 kms and Tiruchirapalli airport which is about 160 kms.
Gingee Fort
Villupuram has been an important city for the rulers during the ancient times. Many kings have made this place the capital of the kingdom. The village is named after the village deity Gingee Amman who is believed to be one of the seven goddesses who protect the village from evil.
Gingee fort was built by king Krishnadevaraya during his rule. While expanding his empire he chose to build the Gingee fort on three hills Rajagiri, Chandragiri and Krishnagiri which were otherwise inaccessible. A huge canal with around a width of 30 feet was dug around the fort to protect it from invaders.
Today, you can see the glorious past of this fort in what remains of the fort after several wars and invasions. The fort was built in such a way that the wall connecting the three hills was made as thick as 20 meters. The tops of the three hills were used to form a citadel. The citadel made of Rajagiri hill is the highest one at a height of 800 feet.
Kalyana Mahal
One of the most interesting places in the Gingee fort is the Kalyana Mahal that is built with the mixture in Indian and Islamic styles. The Mahal has a court room that is surrounded by rooms where the ladies. The court room also has a tower that is built with stones. The tower stands 27 meters in height with a roof that is shaped like a pyramid. The construction of the tower is similar to that of other construction done by Vijayanagara dynasty.
Venugopala Swamy Temple in Viluppuram
The temple of Venugopala swamy is located in the lower citadel of the fort. When you move to the west from the inner gate, you see a beautiful sculpture of Lord Krishna playing flute.Hanuman Temple in Viluppuram
On the outside of the lower part of the fort, one can see the temple of Hanuman. This temple is built amidst beautiful ponds and structures. The two popular ponds in the fort are Chakkarakulam and Chettikulam. The pond Chettikulam was built in the 18th century by the Maratha ruler Raja Shetty.
Ranganatha Temple in Viluppuram
Ranganatha temple is well known for its indo-islamic style architecture. The design of the temple resembles the Vijayanayanagara Dynasty style.You can also find a mosque in the Rajagiri inner fort. The mosque was built by Sad-At-Ullah to celebrate his victory over De Singh in the year 1713. The Persian inscription specifies that the mosque was built in 1717-1718.
